My name's Nicholas Dekker, and breakfast is my favorite meal. I'm a lecturer in the Department of Theatre at Ohio State, and on the side I track down breakfast all over Columbus and anywhere I travel. In 2007 I started my blog BreakfastWithNick.com as a way to capture the places me and my family have visited. In addition to my
blog, I’ve written about food and restaurants for Columbus Crave,
(614) Magazine, PC World Magazine, and guest blogs like Experience Columbus, Daily Crave, and Drink Up Columbus.
I sell my book, Breakfast With Nick:
Columbus, the complete guide to breakfast, brunch, coffee, and
donuts in and around Columbus. It was produced by myself, my wife Beth, and our photographer/designer Robin Oatts of Genre Creative. The book was entirely produced in Columbus: written, photographed, designed, funded, and printed locally (by Old Trail Printing). It was published in November of 2011.
I'm originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan (which is a fine breakfasting town), but I've lived in Columbus for eleven years.
I began blogging in 2007, mainly as a hobby to document great breakfast places we had visited. After a couple years, I built up a following in
Columbus, and in 2010 I began writing for local magazines (first (614)
Magazine and now Crave Columbus). That same year I was featured in a PBS
documentary called Breakfast Special.
As the blogging grew from a hobby, I found that I love championing small businesses. The best breakfast places are the locally owned ones, the hole-in-the-wall spots, the mom-and-pop diners, and I love being able to support
them any way possible. I especially enjoy helping readers discover a new place that they had never thought to try. I wrote the book because I realized that people needed a go-to guidebook to find locally-owned restaurants.
I've always been a writer - I studied English and communications in college - but I had never done any food writing before the blog. So I learned as I've gone along. But generally I love telling the story of a restaurant: when it was
opened, why the owners started it, what type of food they serve, and what's
unique about it.
